The Old English Sheepdog comes to us from the west of England. It belongs to a breed of working dogs. This breed was bred because a strong dog was needed that was capable of defending itself against wolves and protecting herds. In the mid-19th century, these sheepdogs were used to bring herds to market. Apparently the working dog breeds weren’t taxed, but they had to dock their tails to prove it. This practice continues into modern times with this particular breed of dog.

The Old English Sheepdog was already recognized by the AKC in 1905.

These dogs might be brown, but today they are only recognized in gray and white. This dog has a very compact body. This dog became popular as a pet with the media in the mid-1900s. Today, it is used primarily as a pet or show dog, and rarely as a working dog.

This is a fun loving dog. He makes a wonderful family pet and often entertains his family with adorable and fun antics. He is protector of his family members, taking care of the children as he would the flock of sheep. He is friendly with strangers, but can be a bit stubborn, due to his intelligence. Dog obedience training is very important with this breed.

This dog needs to play and exercise every day, preferably a long and pleasant walk. This breed thrives in company, which is why it does not make a good outdoor pet. You need to brush regularly, otherwise it tends to tangle. It has a useful life of 10 to 12 years.

Has a bear like shuffling and tends to wander. He has a very pleasant fun-loving intelligent expression.
