Not many words in the English language have such a special meaning.

Home is a place where you can rest, sit back and be yourself. Almost everyone has their own ideas of what makes a home. And for most people in America, home must be particularly comfortable. In this article, I’ll share some ideas about what a home should look like from the point of view of most Americans.

Americans like their homes to reflect their individual preferences. Many helpful people like to spruce up their house and make it more “fit for human habitation”. They often try to create a comfortable atmosphere to make sure that when they are actually at home, they are really experiencing “at home.” Sofas and loungers can be heavily padded and arranged in groups that encourage warm conversation within the family.

The bathroom even attracts special consideration. Carpeted floors, scented soaps, bright wallpaper, and ornate curtains decorate the “relaxation space” in many homes. And, in general, Americans have more toilets than any other people in the world. People would like an open and easy feeling in their homes. For that reason, many new homes now have large, open kitchens and vaulted ceilings.

Americans are also trying to make the most of space. Most homes have built-in closets and cabinets, and some people even install dressers, file cabinets, and closet organizers to maximize storage space. While keeping the house tidy can often be an ongoing battle, Americans believe it’s worth the fight.

With all this awareness of their homes, you would see in your mind that Americans put a high quality on maintenance. In reality, though, housekeeping doesn’t get as much attention as it used to. Why? Today’s fast-paced lifestyles allow only little free time for dusting, vacuuming, and scrubbing the tub. Paradoxically, however, despite an increasing number of women working outside the home, women still do twice as much domestic work as men.

Modern conveniences like washing machine, vacuum cleaner and dishwasher have improved the efficiency of home maintenance. But by and large, Americans today take a cue from books like Tips on How to Avoid Housework. Consequently, you might think that American homes might be less spotless in the past than they are today.
